Bereal, launched in 2020 by French GoPro employee Alexis Barreyat which was dubbed "anti-Instagram,“ has taken off with Gen Z recently. It’s currently the #1 social networking site on the App Store with more than 20 million downloads and has an eerily similar feature to Instagram's Dual, which came out months before.
The introduction of Dual seems to respond to the public's desire for more authentic content. The similarity was pointed out on Twitter by The Information’s Paris Martineau.
“We’ve built this in a way that makes sense for our community, based on feedback we’ve heard.”
A Meta spokesperson said in a statement to Motherboard.
“Other platforms have similar features—like Snap, BeReal—but Dual is used in a way that is unique to Instagram and meets the demands of our community,” he added.
